Maitland wedding photographer: Brick, river and verandah

Lumenry is a Maitland wedding photographer based in Cooks Hill, about forty minutes away down the New England Highway. Maitland suits couples who want an old town around them: a church or registry ceremony in streets built in the 1800s, a walk along the river, then out to the vineyards or a hall in town for the night.

Where a Maitland wedding photographer takes you

A bride and groom stand close in a field of tall golden grass, seed heads in front of them and a pale sky behind

Maitland was built to last a flood, and it shows in the photos: thick brick, high verandahs and streets that look the same as they did a hundred years ago.

The old centre runs along High Street, which curves with the Hunter because it was laid out along the riverbank.

The Levee, the stretch where the street opens onto the water, gives you the river, the big sky over the flood plain and a run of shopfront verandahs within a couple of minutes' walk of each other.

Church Street climbs away from it with some of the oldest houses in the city. East Maitland, across Wallis Creek, has the sandstone walls of the old gaol.

None of these needs a long drive between them, which matters on a day that only has an hour for portraits.

Four places we'd photograph you in Maitland

  1. The Levee

The riverfront end of High Street, with the Hunter on one side and a row of restored shopfronts on the other.

Wide paths, open sky to the west, and benches and steps to sit a bridal party on without it looking posed.

  2. Church Street

A short, quiet street of Victorian houses, including Grossmann House and Brough House, both built in the 1860s. Iron lace, cedar doors and deep shade from old trees, so it works at midday when the river is too bright.

  3. Walka Water Works

An 1880s brick pumping station with a tall chimney, beside a reservoir at Oakhampton on the edge of town. The building, the water and the bush around it give three backdrops in one stop. It's run by Maitland City Council, and ceremonies there are booked through them.

  4. Maitland Gaol

The gaol at East Maitland held prisoners from the 1840s until 1998 and is now open for tours and events. Its high sandstone walls give a warm, even backdrop late in the day.

Photos inside the grounds are arranged with the gaol, and we ask for you.

Maitland sits on flat ground with open sky in every direction, so there's no hill to bring an early sunset: the light lasts right to the end.

In summer the middle of the day is fierce and the streets hold the heat, so we keep the portraits for the last hour, when the brick goes orange and the river turns gold.

On winter mornings the river flats often lie under fog until about nine, which gives soft, quiet pictures for a couple getting ready early.

Asked about Maitland weddings

Can we marry in town and hold the reception at a Hunter vineyard?

Yes, it's one of the most common ways a Maitland wedding runs. Pokolbin is about forty minutes from the centre of town, so we plan the ceremony early in the afternoon, take portraits along the way and arrive at the vineyard with the guests. We'll help you set the times so nobody spends golden hour in a car.

What happens to our photos if the Hunter is in flood?

Maitland knows floods well, and the council closes riverside paths and low roads when the water comes up. If that happens we move the river portraits to Church Street, the Town Hall steps or a spot on higher ground, and we check the forecast and the road reports with you in the week before.

Do we need permission for photos at Walka Water Works?

Walka is a public reserve run by Maitland City Council. Ceremonies there are booked through the council, and a large group or a set-up needs their say-so. A couple and a photographer walking through for portraits is a different thing, but we check the current rules for your date so there are no surprises.

Where do we go for photos in Maitland on a 40 degree day?

Into the shade and close to the cars. Church Street's trees, the verandahs along High Street and the inside of the church give us good light out of the sun. We shorten the walk, carry water for the two of you and leave the open river bank for the last half hour before sunset.

Is Maitland Gaol available for wedding photos?

The gaol runs tours and hosts events, and photo sessions inside the walls are arranged with them in advance. The outside walls on John Street can be photographed from the footpath any time. If the gaol is on your list, tell us early and we'll make the request for your date.

How early can you start on a Maitland wedding morning?

As early as you need. We're about forty minutes away, so a seven o'clock start for hair and make-up is no trouble. If it's a winter wedding and the river fog is in, it's worth being up for: a few frames by the water before nine can be the quietest pictures of the day.

Leave an hour for High Street.

Tell us the church, the reception and the date. We'll write you a timeline that keeps the river light for the two of you.
