Caves Beach Hotel wedding photographer: Boardwalk, beach or hilltop

A Caves Beach Hotel wedding today means Caves Coastal Bar & Bungalows: the old hotel on Mawson Close was rebuilt in 2008 and 2009 and has since changed its name. We rate it among the best venues south of the city because it offers three ceremony spots by the sea and the bungalows are a walk from all of them.

Three ceremony spots by the sea: the Caves Beach Hotel wedding we love

The venue gives you a real choice of backdrop: vows on the boardwalk above the water beside the bungalows, down on the sand of Caves Beach, or up on the hilltop with the coastline spread out below.

Each one looks completely different in a photograph, so the album can change character in a single afternoon.

And because the bungalows are steps from the sand, there's no rush: a couple staying on site can slip back out after dinner for a few frames in the blue light over the ocean, or meet us on the beach the next morning while the guests sleep in.

Getting there

Caves Beach is about forty minutes south of Newcastle, down through Lake Macquarie toward Swansea, and the venue is at 27 Mawson Close, opposite the beach. There's free parking on site and more in the streets nearby.

Every bungalow, villa and townhouse on the property is a short walk from the ceremony and reception spaces, so the bridal party can get ready on site and walk to the vows.

For a couple staying over, that also means no transport to book between the ceremony, the photos and the reception.

How the day runs

The beach faces the ocean to the east, so the sun goes down behind the land and the ocean picks up soft colour in the evening.

The venue suggests the Mawson Room, with its raised deck over the park and the ocean, for a sunset ceremony.

A hilltop ceremony needs a council permit, which the venue arranges subject to availability, and its packages include a wet weather option.

If you want the caves, the tide decides: they can only be reached at low tide, so we'd check the tide chart for your date before setting any times.

Before your day

We'd meet you at the venue at your ceremony time, look at all three ceremony spots, then check the tide table together and decide whether a walk to the caves fits your day.

Where we'd take portraits at Caves Beach

  1. The boardwalk

One of the venue's ceremony spots, set above the water beside the bungalows.

The timber boards give a clean line for a walking shot, and the ocean behind you stays in the frame from almost every angle, so it's a quick win straight after the vows.

  2. The hilltop

The venue's hilltop ceremony site, above the coastline with a wide ocean view.

Height makes a difference: from up here we can take a wide frame with the two of you small against the sea and sky, the picture many couples end up framing at home.

  3. Caves Beach

The sand opposite the venue, and the third ceremony option. In the evening the beach is lit from behind the land, so the light skims the sand and the wet shoreline holds the colour of the sky. Barefoot and relaxed is how this spot works best.

  4. The sea caves

At the southern end of Caves Beach, a walk along the sand from the venue.

They can only be reached at low tide, and only when the swell is gentle, so we treat them as a bonus if the tide and the sea allow it on your day, never a promise.

Questions about photographing a Caves Beach Hotel wedding

Is the Caves Beach Hotel the same place as Caves Coastal?

Yes. The hotel on Mawson Close was rebuilt in 2008 and 2009, reopened as Caves Beachside Hotel and now trades as Caves Coastal Bar & Bungalows. Many people still call it the Caves Beach Hotel, which is why you'll see both names. Weddings are booked with Caves Coastal directly.

Will there be time to reach the sea caves for portraits?

Only if the tide and the swell allow. The caves at the southern end can only be reached at low tide, and even then rough water can wash into the entrance. We look up the low tide for your date months ahead, and on the day we decide on the spot, putting your safety ahead of any picture.

Which ceremony spot is best for photos?

They each give something different. The boardwalk is closest and simplest, the beach is the most relaxed, and the hilltop gives the widest view for bigger groups. We'll stand in each with you before you decide, at the time of day you plan to marry, so you can see the light for yourselves.

Is a permit needed to marry on the hilltop?

Yes, a hilltop ceremony needs a council permit. The venue's wedding packages include arranging that permit, subject to availability, so book early if the hilltop is the one you want. A beach or boardwalk ceremony gives you a fallback if the date is taken.

What happens if it rains?

The venue's packages include a wet weather option for the ceremony, so you won't be standing in the rain. For portraits we'd use the venue's rooms with ocean views, and keep an eye on the sky: coastal showers often clear fast, and the light after a storm over the water can be remarkable.

Can our bridal party get ready on site?

Yes. Caves Coastal has bungalows, villas and townhouses on the property, and the venue says all of them are a walk from the ceremony and reception spaces. Getting ready on site means we can photograph the morning, walk with you to the ceremony and never lose time on the road.

Check the tide, then the clock.

Share your date and your pick of the three ceremony spots with us. We'll pull the tide chart and the sunset time and build the day from both.
